- The meeting is scheduled on October 2 in Washington
- Qureshi expressed hope that the US would work on what is favorable for Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi arrived in Washington on Monday to represent Pakistan at the UN General Assembly, and to meet with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the sidelines.
The meeting is aimed at resetting bilateral relations and is scheduled for Oct. 2. During Pompeo’s first visit to Islamabad earlier this month, he invited Qureshi to visit the US.
Before Pompeo’s visit, the US said there would be no resumption of security assistance or aid to Pakistan until it is more proactive against militant groups in Afghanistan and within its own borders.
Qureshi said: “Pakistan desires foreign relations based on mutual respect and equality.” At a session with the Pakistani-American community in his country’s embassy in Washington, he added that Prime Minister Imran Khan is keen to engage with expatriates in the US because he appreciates their strengths and contributions.
