Pakistan formally begins election process
  • Pakistani candidates hoping to run for a seat in parliament in the July 25 vote have started submitting their nominations
  • Former chief justice Nasir-ul-Mulk was chosen last month as caretaker prime minister

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday started accepting nomination papers from candidates who want to contest the general election on July 25.
June 8 is the deadline for submitting nomination papers, which will be scrutinized by June 14, the ECP said.
The deadline for filing appeals is June 19, and the final list of candidates will be issued on June 29, it added.

On Monday, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar said the election will be held on time with no possibility of delay.
A day earlier, caretaker Prime Minister Nasir-ul-Mulk also said the election will be held on time.

FASTFACTS

The election will be the first time in its history that Pakistan has seen a government complete its five-year-term without a military coup or a political crisis leading to the disbanding of parliament.
