ISLAMABAD: The visit to Pakistan by Egypt’s grand mufti, and his endorsement of a religious decree against terrorism, will help Islamabad’s efforts against extremism, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Thursday.
Abbasi received Dr. Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam at his office. Welcoming him to Pakistan, Abbasi said the visit will bolster bilateral relations and cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.
“Pakistan and Egypt faced similar challenges, including the issue of terrorism,” Abbasi said in a statement issued after the meeting.
He lauded the intellectual and educational contributions of Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, describing it as “a voice of moderation” in the Muslim world.
Abbasi emphasized the need for greater engagements on all levels, including exchanges of students and religious leaders.
Allam thanked Pakistan’s government for its warm welcome and hospitality, and for holding an international conference on the promotion of religious tolerance, which he said sends a strong message regarding the country’s sincerity in fighting terrorism.
Abbasi said the government has decided to confer the Hilal-i-Quaid-i-Azam Award on Allam in recognition of his services to Islam.
Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, minister for religious affairs and interfaith harmony, Pir Muhammad Amin-ul-Hasnat Shah, minister of state for religious affairs, and Egyptian Ambassador Ahmed Mohammad Fadel Yacouba attended the meeting.
