JEDDAH: Lebanese-Australian model Jessica Kahawaty is urging fans to donate a minute of their salaries to end child violence, as part of the UNICEF Australia initiative “A Minute of Your Time.”
In a video message on Instagram, Kahawaty said: “Child violence doesn’t just occur in violent communities or war-torn countries. It happens every single day in our communities around us. Child neglect, child abuse, child exploitation are killing one child every five minutes in the world.”
She added: “You have 1,440 minutes in your day. Take your yearly salary and you divide that into what you’d actually make in a minute. If I told you that what you make in that minute would actually make a huge difference... you’d be changing so many lives.”
UNICEF said it will use the donation to help protect children and support young victims in Papua New Guinea, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
Fashion house Louis Vuitton selected Kahawaty last year to join UNICEF at the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan to appeal for support for children affected by the Syrian crisis, which has seen millions of people (including more than 2 million children) displaced. She has said child rights is a topic close to her heart.
