RIYADH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) announced on Friday that an OIC delegation had a fruitful visit to the Gambia to discuss preparations for the next Islamic Summit in 2019.
The OIC delegation was headed by Director General for Political Affairs Tariq Bakheet and met Gambian officials including Vice President Fatoumata Tambajang, delivering a message of support from OIC Secretary-General Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen.
The small West African country will host the 14th Session of the OIC’s Islamic Summit next year.
“Our visit to Gambia was the first within the current arrangements for the summit to be hosted by Gambia next year and will be followed by reciprocal visits between the two sides,” Bakheet told Arab News.
He added that his delegation’s meeting with the Gambian vice president was very positive. Tambajang expressed her country’s gratitude for having been selected to host the summit and briefed the OIC delegation on their efforts to ensure its success.
Over the course of two days, the OIC delegation conducted site visits to a number of facilities that will be used for the summit, including the International Conference Center, which is under construction.
Following the site visits, the delegation was invited to brief members of the Gambian Cabinet at their meeting held on Thursday.
