CAIRO: A wristwatch belonging to Egypt’s late King Farouk will be leading an upcoming Dubai-held auction, with preliminary valuations putting the price between $400,000 and $800,000.
It is said that King Farouk’s love for watches was inherited from his father, King Fuad, who owned many pieces from the world’s greatest watchmakers.
The wristwatch by Patek Philippe Reference 1518 will be auctioned at Christie’s Watches and Wristwatches Dubai auction in March.
The model was first released in 1941 and only 281 pieces were made. It was personalized with unique engraving on the casing of the Royal Crown of Egypt, a half moon and a star resembling Egypt’s flag at the time, and bears his initial “F”.
This watch is not the only example of Patek Philippe’s craftmanshsip in King Farouk’s collection, Egyptian news websites said.
Another timepiece was found which featured a cloisonné enamel of a map of Egypt and Sudan, once ruled by Farouk.
It included two diamonds placed at a distance to accurately reflect the geographical distance between the capitals Cairo and Khartoum.
