RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories: A Palestinian was killed during clashes with Israeli forces in the north of the occupied West Bank late Wednesday, the Palestinian health ministry announced.
Israeli forces entered the Palestinian city of Jenin late Wednesday, eyewitnesses said, with violent clashes breaking out in which Israeli police said there were a “number of injuries.”
The health ministry named the dead man as Ahmed Jarrar, 22.
Israel’s Shin Beth security services said shots were fired during a raid by border guards to capture the alleged perpetrators of an attack earlier this month in which a rabbi was shot dead.
“During the clashes, one of the suspects was killed while others were arrested,” Shin Beth said in a statement without giving further details.
Israeli media reported that at least two border guards were wounded in the gunfire exchange, one of them seriously.
An army spokesperson was unable to confirm those details when reached by AFP.
Palestinian eyewitnesses said they saw at least two Palestinians arrested, with clashes ongoing in the early hours of Thursday.
Videos posted online by Palestinians showed multiple Israeli armored vehicles entering the city.
Raziel Shevah, a 35-year-old rabbi, was shot dead near the Jewish settlement he lived in near Nablus on January 9 by unknown assailants.
