JERUSALEM: An Israeli civilian was killed on Tuesday night when an assailant shot at his car near a settlement in the north of the occupied West Bank, the army said.
“A suspect opened fire at an Israeli civilian in his vehicle” near Havat Gilad, east of Nablus, an Israeli military spokesperson wrote on Twitter.
“The civilian was severely injured and taken to the hospital,” the spokesperson said, adding that troops were searching the area for the assailant.
The man died in hospital following the shooting the army said, without specifying if he was a settler. According to Israeli media reports, the man was wounded in the neck.
About 400,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel for 50 years.
The settlements are deemed illegal under international law and widely seen as a main obstacle to peace.
Fourteen Palestinians have been killed in unrest since President Donald Trump announced on Dec. 6 that the United States was recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
