MIAMI: Hurricane Irma has formed in the eastern Atlantic as a Category 2 storm, just days after the first major hurricane of the season, Harvey, unleashed massive rain and floods over Texas, US officials said Thursday.
Hurricane Irma churned in open waters off the west coast of Africa, packing winds of 100 miles per hour (155 kilometers per hour).
“Irma is forecast to become a major hurricane by tonight and is expected to be an extremely dangerous hurricane for the next several days,” said the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.
