Toll rises to at least 30 dead in London tower block fire: police
LONDON: The toll from the London tower block fire has risen to at least 30 people dead and the flames have now been extinguished, police said on Friday.

“We know that at least 30 people have died as a result of this fire,” police commander Stuart Cundy told reporters, adding that the fire was not considered to have been started “deliberately.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday ordered a public inquiry into the devastating London tower block fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“We owe that to the families, to the people who have lost loved ones and the homes in which they lived,” said May, as firefighters said parts of the council-owned building in west London had become structurally unsafe.

The prime minister said the inquiry, an official review of action by public institutions, was needed to ensure “this terrible tragedy is properly investigated.”

The 24-story Grenfell Tower was home to around 600 people when the fire ripped through the building.
