UPS, Emirates Foundation come together to promote safe driving in UAE

To promote road safety in the UAE, The UPS Foundation has announced an initial grant and in-kind commitment of more than $40,000 to the Emirates Foundation, an independent philanthropic organization set up by the Abu Dhabi government to facilitate public-private funded initiatives to improve the welfare of youth across the UAE. UPS and Emirates Foundation volunteers will educate new drivers on safe driving techniques through its UPS Road Code safe driving program. UAE is the seventh country worldwide to benefit from the program.
The UAE Ministry of Interior recently announced it has successfully reduced the number of road incidents by 37 percent since 2008. UPS drivers are known to be among the safest drivers in the world — more than 8,000 UPS drivers have a 25-year accident-free driving record. UPS and Emirates Foundation volunteers, trained by UPS experts, will teach participants the same methods used by those drivers.
“UPS is proud to collaborate with the Emirates Foundation to bring the UPS Road Code Program to the UAE. Improving road safety should be a priority for all of us and this partnership allows us to reach our target demographic, including beginner drivers,” said Jean-Francois Condamine, president of the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East, and Africa (ISMEA) region for UPS. “As a transportation and logistics company, the safety of our employees and the community we live and work in are of the utmost importance to UPS,” he added.
During this first session, students from Zayed University in Abu Dhabi will learn various safety techniques on driving simulators. The participants will follow the program either just before or after they start driving. The goal is to train approximately 400 future or new drivers by the end of 2017. The program will be developed in Dubai and the Northern Emirates with additional simulators in 2018.
“The future of this nation depends on its young people, therefore, building awareness about road safety at an early age is important as youth are more prone to taking risks and getting involved in accidents,” said Clare Woodcraft-Scott, CEO of the Emirates Foundation.
“Through our partnership with UPS we will employ our expertise and youth network to identify those between the ages of 17-25 and train them on the right skills and knowledge to improve driving habits as well as educate them about their safety on the road and that of others.”
