JEDDAH: Four teams coming off losses rebounded with victories at the resumption of eliminations on Week 5 of the 1st Filipino Community Basketball League (FCBL) Basketball Tournament at the Sheraton Jeddah Hotel Sport Complex court.
Setting the tone of the week was Hassan Zeineddein’s Dar Jana, 82-55 winner over The Legends in the first game Friday, with Khorbatly as the Best Player of the game. Khorbatly finished the game with 25 points while Samir and Neo added 10 and 9 points respectively.
It was the first win in two outings for Dar Jana in Division C1 (Group of Fast Rising Teams). The Legends went down to its second straight defeat.
Thursday, Yummy Yummy edged out Falcunit 72-71 in the first game to open the week’s proceedings.
Quirado, Ramos and Ablazo scored 21, 11 and 10 points, but it was Carcabuso with 8 points who grabbed Best Players honors.
The win gave Yummy Yummy in the C2 Division (Group of Bae’s Team) a 2-1 win-loss record behind the leading 3-0 of AVK Pioneers who crushed Olive Arabia 95-72 in the second game Thursday. AVK rode a 23-10 first quarter to the easy victory, as Olive shot 16 points to the 29 by the Pioneers in the third quarter.
Vallejo top-scored at AVK with 17 points while Best Player Carballo and Navarro added 14 and 13 points.
Sharbatly, meantime, continued its strong performance in C3 as it trounced Sofitel Hotel 82-62 in the third game Thursday, with Uyag, scoring 10 points, as the Best Player of the game. Orna added 14 points and Ali made 11. The win boosted Sharbatly to 3-1 in a tie for the division lead with idle Jeddah Hilton.
Caringal, Duritan and Ahmed were the leading scorers at Sofitel on 21, 17 and 10 points in that order.
Triple Ace in C3 was another team to recover from a defeat in its last outing, beating Jotun Paints 79-65 in the second game Friday, with Aguilar as the Best Player awardee.
Aguilar led his team with 25 points while Dedase had 24 and San Juan 10. Pacaigue was at the helm of Jotun’s losing cause with 23 points.
SMDC, which entered two teams in the tournament, had its Division B (Group of Star Studded Teams) squad getting back on track, following its 79-74 defeat by Al Muhaidib, when it brought down Nesma 101-94 in the third game Friday thanks mainly to veteran Christian Guimpatan who scored 22 points to become the Best Player of the game. Sandro added 21 and Belmonte contributed 14 points as SMDC canceled out the 32 points from Nesma’s Dula.
Like Dar Jana Freyssinet rebounded strongly from its last loss by crushing Rimmel 79-48 in the third C2 match of the week.
Ugnatan’s 31 points, 13 of them in a murderous second quarter that saw Freyssinet shoot 29 to Rimmel’s 11, deservedly won him Best Player citation.
In another C3 match, Dabarkadz brought down Sofitel Hotel to improve to 2-1 in the team standings.
Best Player Navarro had 16 points at the helm of Dabarkadz.
