QUETTA: Pakistani police said gunmen stormed a police training center in Quetta and wounded at least cadets.
Balochistan police chief Ahsan Mehboob told reporters on Monday that four gunmen attacked the training center in a suburban area of Quetta. He said the attackers attempted to enter a hostel housing the trainees, and a gunbattle erupted when the hostel guards resisted. Six trainees were wounded.
Mehboob said police and paramilitary forces surrounded the venue to eliminate attackers and rescue the trainees.
A military statement put the number of attackers at up to six, and said Army and Frontier Corps troops were conducting a counterterrorism operation at the site.
In a separate development, two gunmen on a motorcycle killed officer Akbar Ali in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said Khalid Khan, an area police officer.
Khan said the attackers fled the scene after killing the officer, who was on his way to work in Peshawar.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group’s spokesman, Muhammad Khurasani, said in a statement that the shooters returned to their hideout after accomplishing the mission to kill Ali.
It is unclear why Ali was specifically targeted.
Pakistan has carried out military operations against militants in tribal areas near Afghanistan and in cities across Pakistan, but extremists are still capable of staging regular attacks.
