Gulf Cooperation Council countries should be ready to defend themselves in any case of emergency, said GCC Secretary-General Abdullatif Al-Zayani.
He also said national defense could not be separated from the GCC defense.
GCC realizes that its cohesion and unity to face any foreign attacks requires boosting its cooperation, he said.
Al-Zayani’s comments came in a speech, which was delivered on his behalf by Assistant Secretary-General for Security Affairs Brig. Gen. Hazza Al Hajri, at the GCC National Security and Regional Security Conference.
The Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (DERASAT) organized the event.
GCC secretary-general said that GCC leaders had decided to set up a "Unified Military Command" to consolidate the regional security, ratified the "security agreement between the GCC countries" and created a "Gulf police" to confront security threats.
He said GCC leaders approved the establishment of a Gulf Academy for Strategic and Security Studies to prepare top officers in the armed forces and police from government and private sectors. He said the GCC faces many challenges and threats including potential cyber-attacks, food and water security.
He said the GCC Emergency Centre will be active from its headquarters in Kuwait in order to provide all preparations and means to face any threats.
