A social initiative has been launched in Jeddah with the aim to spread awareness of the protection of marine life and the marine environment and to emphasize the dangers of marine pollution. The cleanup campaign also seeks to engage the community in the drive to sustain life under the waters of the Red Sea.
Makkah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah approved the formal launching of the cleaning campaign entitled “our environment is our responsibility,” a joint effort of Century Events and the MBC Hope Channel, to promote the cleaning of the seabed and enhance the marine environment.
“Our aim is not merely to clean the sea bed but also to spread awareness of environment protection in the sea waters,” Ahmad Sahab, CEO of Century Events and head of the marine environment group, said.
He said there was an urgent need to raise awareness of the dangers of waste disposal into sea waters and the importance of the marine environment being free of pollution to maintain sustainable marine resources which are fast becoming extinct in the Red Sea.
Studies have shown that up to 60 percent of the coral may become extinct by 2030 owing to the adverse environmental conditions prevailing in the Red Sea, he said.
“We are focusing on the prime locations of the Red Sea shorelines,” Ahmed Sahab said adding that the latest cleanup drive took place near the Shuaiba waterfront with the participation of 200 divers.
He noted that a similar cleaning campaign had been carried out in Jeddah near the Hilton Hotel on the corniche’ where 150 divers had volunteered to clean the Red Sea.
Mariam Farag of MBC stated that the third cleanup campaign is scheduled for next Saturday with the participation of an estimated 200 volunteer divers. “Similar campaigns are planned along the Red Sea coastal areas in the next few weeks,” she said.
She stated that the social responsibility group is working to introduce the culture of marine awareness among school children in the city as well.
