Prominent social media activist nominated for top Kuwait prize

Khaled Aburas, a Saudi journalist who became well known through his Twitter interviews with prominent personalities and his social media campaigns for social issues, has been nominated for Sheikh Salim Al-Ali Al-Sabah Informatics Award by his followers on the new media.
Nominations for the prestigious award were opened on March 10 and will be closed on March 31, said an announcement on the award’s website, adding that selection of winners would be done following the approved criteria.
Winners will be announced through the social media, it added.
Aburas, who has about 50,000 followers on Twitter and Facebook, commended Sheikh Salim, a senior Kuwaiti royal family member, for instituting an award to promote culture, art and media in the Arab world, adding that it would contribute to strengthening Arab unity.
The independent and non-profit award which promotes informatics and digital culture was established in 2001 under the patronage and support of Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, the president of the National Guard.
The award has spread its events to include all the Arab states in 2007, under the patronage of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and is considered the first of its kind and the largest in the sector.
