The Civil Defense will take 40 days to recover the rest of six-year-old Lama Al-Rouqi's body, an official said on Wednesday.
Mastour Al-Harithy, director of the Civil Defense in Tabuk, said his department began drilling operations with Saudi Aramco’s support on Tuesday.
Civil Defense personnel had managed to retrieve part of her body on Monday. She died after falling into an abandoned well on Dec. 20.
Al-Harithy said Civil Defense officers found part of the body after recovering Lama’s toy. “The toy was shown to the girl’s uncle because her father is still mentally unstable,” the official said.
Sabah Al-Arabiya, the Arabic channel’s morning show, reported that Lama’s father is in a poor mental state and is on sedatives.
The channel reported that the operation to find the rest of the body would take over a month because of the difficult terrain.
The father has criticized the Civil Defense for its rescue operations, claiming that officials failed to bring in high-tech equipment. He also claimed that Saudi Aramco sought huge sums of money to provide assistance in the search.
The Civil Defense has rejected the allegations.
Lama was out picnicking with her family when she fell into the well in Al-Asmar valley in Haql governorate. She fell more than 30 meters into the 100-meter-deep and half-a-meter-wide well.
