Students hone their speaking skills at Al-Wurood UN event

Al-Wurood International School in Jeddah recently hosted the third Peevees United Nations Simulation Conference (UNSC) under the patronage of the Peevees Group of Schools at the Indian Consulate.
In all, 26 students from the New Al-Wurood school, Al-Yasmin International School in Riyadh, Al-Khozama International in Dammam and Jabel Farzan International School in Rabigh participated in the conference entitled, “Unite to End Violence against Women.”
The conference was aimed at developing skills such as decision-making, critical-thinking, problem-solving and negotiating among students. Participating students represented countries such as Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Brazil, China, Iran, Pakistan and Belgium.
Sridevi Menon, principal of the host school, welcomed the gathering. Khalid Omar of King Abdulaziz University opened the event and handed over the UN flag to the chairperson of the mock UN General Assembly, Master Karan Dilsher.
Omar emphasized the need to encourage students to participate in such programs. He congratulated the organizers for initiating the mock UN conference. Joselito Guhit, a distinguished Toastmaster, delivered the keynote speech.
Topics discussed at the conference included ‘Women’s Safety: Problems and Solutions’ and ‘Is Genetically Modified Food safe? Will it solve the World Hunger?’
“The participants perfectly played the role of world leaders. They exuded confidence while delivering their speeches, questioning the other leaders and listening to the suggestions made by others,” the principal said.
The Security Council was chaired by Salman Ummer. The topics discussed in the council included international cooperation on humanitarian assistance during natural disasters and global financial crisis.
Indian Consul General Faiz Ahmed Kidwai was the chief guest. A.M Ashraf, general manager of the Peevees Group of Schools, S.M. Noushad, group manager, Padmini Siva, academic director, K. Rahmatullah, principal of Al-Yasmin, Sajna C M, headmistress of Al-Khozama and Shadma Ansari, principal of Jabel Farzan, attended the event.
P. Kathireshan, vice principal of NAWIS Boys Section, delivered the welcome speech, while Sereena Jalaludeen, vice principal, NAWIS Girls Section gave a vote of thanks.
The overall championship went to New Al-Wurood, while Al-Yasmin was declared the first runner up and Al-Khozama the second runner up. Samiya Nishath of the New Al-Wurood School bagged the best delegate award for the General Assembly, while the best speech award was secured by Iran, represented by Al-Yasmin. The best delegate and the best speech award for the security council were bagged by Ashra Farhat of Al-Wurood.
