Former Indian ambassador to the Kingdom, Mahmood bin Mohammed, died Friday in his home city of Hyderabad.
An ex-police officer, Mahmood bin Mohammed served as Indian ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1985 to 1987 and was the first Indian envoy to be stationed in Riyadh when the embassy shifted from Jeddah. Mahmood bin Mohammed wrote a book on Indo-Saudi relations and delivered a series of lectures on relations between the two countries on various forums.
Born in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, Mahmood has the rare distinction of having served in the Indian Police Service at various levels in the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad and later in the newly independent government of India, before his appointment as ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
He also worked with the United Nations in the area of crime prevention. A classmate and close friend of two former chief ministers of the state of Andhra Pradesh, K. Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy and D. Sanjeevaih, he also had a personal rapport with Prince Muffakham Jah, the prince of Hyderabad.
