A Pakistani immigrant to the United Kingdom from the town of Pattoki Kasur in Punjab Pakistan, Muhammad Shahid Nazir, who has since settled in East London, began work on a fish stall at Queen’s Market, Upton Park where his employer instructed him to use a trader’s call to attract customers.
He soon composed the song “One Pound Fish”… it goes “Come on ladies, come on ladies; One Pound Fish.” It became an Internet smash after a passing by customer, Colin Miller, uploaded a video of Nazir, onto YouTube. A music video to accompany the release of “One Pound Fish” was first released onto You Tube on Dec. 10, 2012. Since then it has already hit over 5 million views in the YouTube.
Now “One Pound Fish” has become a strong contender for the Christmas No. 1, competing with so many other already established artists. One of the well-known bookmakers, William Hill is quoting a long odd of 33/1 for Nazir at the moment. However, a leading London daily says that “to put things in perspective, he is twice as likely as Justin Bieber to take the top spot and four times as likely as Sir Cliff Richard.” Who will be the number one this time? Just have a go for the ‘One Pound Fish’ man, the dark horse for the coveted award! Good luck Nazir! — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
