The 16th Board of Directors of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) announced the winning candidates in their elections held Wednesday.
The chamber supervisory committee named elected members from the merchant’s category: Ali Salih Al-Othaim (716 votes), Mohammed Fahad Al-Otaibi (650), Othman Tariq Al-Qasabi (526), Sami Al-Abd Al-Karim (500), Mohammed Abdulaziz Al-Ajlan (495) and Mansour Al-Shithri (406).
Elected members from the industrial category were: Fahad Al-Hammadi (44 votes), Abdulrahaman Al-Zamil (19), Fahad Al-Thinyyan (18), Saad Al-Mujjal (13), Abdulaziz Al-Ajlan (5) and Bandar Al-Humaidhi (3).
Tawfiq Al-Rabeeah, minister of commerce and industry, will appoint the remaining six members of the 18-member RCCI Board. The minister has the right to appoint one third of the board to ensure representation from all business sectors.
The number of votes in the current election was 5,625 compared to 5,400 in the last election. The voting system was run on an individual basis unlike previous elections that were conducted on a list basis.
The leaders of the business community said they are awaiting the announcement of the remaining six board members.
Yahya Azzan, head of the supervisory committee, said they had not received any objections to the election results. Any challenge to the results could be filed within five days of the announcement on Wednesday night.
Voters say they are satisfied with how the elections were managed and that RCCI-owned Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center contributed to the success of the elections due to its size and high-tech media and electronic equipment.
The e-voting system reduced the voting time to less than five minutes compared to one hour when it was done manually. The voting monitors are linked to the RCCI electronic circuit and commercial registration system of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This allows for accurate checking of data and voter identity.
