Plans to establish 60 new parks in Jeddah

By MUHAMMAD HUMAIDAN | ARAB NEWS

JEDDAH: Newly appointed Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu Ras on Wednesday announced his department’s plan to establish 60 new parks in different parts of the city next year. He said work on many of them would be completed this year.

“We have already opened 37 new parks in Jeddah’s northern, eastern and central districts,” said Aburas. He opened three new parks in Zahra, Raihan and Khozama in Zahra districts.

“We understand the role and importance of parks for the public. They add to the beauty of the city and increase recreational facilities for people,” he said, adding that 50 new parks would be opened by the end of this year. The mayor urged the residents of Jeddah to protect the parks. “The government has spent a large amount of money to construct these parks for the public benefit. It is our duty to protect them,” he said.

Aburas also spoke about the mayoralty’s plan to develop the existing gardens in various parts of the city.

Bahjat Hamwa, director of gardens and plantations, said the three parks opened by the mayor were established as part of a plan to set up 100 parks in 100 weeks. The three parks are spread over an area of 2,213 square meters  in Zahra, 3,496 square meters in Raihan and 2,294 square meters in Khozama.

“We have taken into consideration the needs of the handicapped when designing the new parks. We have also allocated parking areas for them,” Hamwa said. Last year the mayoralty allocated SR15 million for parks.

The problem is that these parks are generally far for most people. Also, many of them are next to major roads which makes them unsafe for families. Who comes up with the plans for these?

Don you think it is better to upgrade the existing parks which are in very bad condition in all over Jeddah, there are plenty of parks in Azizia and other Areas which are used as garbage area.

It's a really very good idea of developing the parks to create the beauty of the city. The biggest problem is there are no drainage lines, all time standing the sewage water in Azizia district. Multi billion meaga projects are comming up in saudi arabia and no body is there to think of improving the basic facility like water supply and drainage system....Many areas where expatiates are living rents are sky high with lack of basic facilities....Government should think on this very seriously

Why don't they make 6 big general parks along with a proper jogging tracks, instead of 60 small area's parks.

Yes, i have no idea how/why so many of the parks are placed in between major highways with cars doing 100km/h+.....!!!! How can this be a safe/healthy place to take the kids out due to all the fumes....?!?! Unfortunatly the issue is that the elite people in the mayors office will never take their own kids to these parks (as they have their own private gardens etc) so they don't actually use the "services" like the rest of us so don't inderstand how idiotic it is...
