Right to peaceful use of nuclear energy reaffirmed

RIYADH: King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) President Hashim Abdullah Yamani led the Kingdom's delegation at the fourth Nuclear Security Summit that concluded on Friday in Washington.

The summit reaffirmed that participating countries are firmly committed to nuclear disarmament and that nuclear security enhancement measures will not hinder member states from the development and utilization of nuclear energy for peaceful uses, a K.A.CARE spokesman here said.
The Washington summit was attended by kings, presidents and representatives of over 50 countries, besides representatives of four international organizations including the United Nations, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and the European Union.
The two-day summit to reaffirm commitment to nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful uses of nuclear power, witnessed the representatives and leaders exchanging views on nuclear terrorism threats, discussed various ways of continuous international cooperation and reviewed results to enhance nuclear security.
Yamani was accompanied by a high-ranking delegation at the summit which included K.A.CARE Vice President Waleed Husain Abu Alfaraj.
The first summit was held in Washington in 2010 and was followed by additional summits in Seoul in 2012 and The Hague in 2014. The Kingdom has attended all four summits.
These summits assume greater significance for having achieved huge improvements in terms of security of nuclear materials and have evolved ways for stronger international institutions that support nuclear security.
