GENEVA: Saudi Arabia has called on the international community, especially developed countries, to shoulder the responsibility of alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people.
“This will help reduce the burden on neighboring countries which bear the bulk of responsibility in providing safe haven to Syrian refugees,” Faisal Trad, the permanent representative of the Kingdom to the UN was quoted as saying by SPA on Wednesday.
He was speaking during a high-level meeting on sharing international responsibility to accept Syrian refugees here.
Saudi Arabia is one of the first countries that have contributed to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people by providing direct financial support to international organizations or through direct aid to neighboring countries hosting the refugees.
Saudi Arabia has also shouldered the burden of hosting a million Syrians inside the Kingdom now. They are allowed to work and move freely.
They are also provided health and education services for free. The current number of Syrian students in Saudi schools and universities is over 100,000.
At the regional and international level, the total aid provided so far by Saudi Arabia for Syrians, both in Syria and neighboring countries, amounted to $900 million.
Also, the Kingdom has made a commitment during the Kuwait and London conferences to offer $325 million in aid.
