QASSIM: A woman teacher here prevented a potentially tragic accident by taking over the wheel of a moving vehicle after her school’s driver suffered a heart attack and passed out.
Teacher Amani Al-Mansour said she had been forced to take action when the driver lost consciousness as they were traveling back from Awthal center west of Qassim toward Aziziyah Al-Tarmas, an online publication reported. The driver later passed away.
Al-Mansour said she noticed that the vehicle was veering sharply across the road into oncoming traffic, with sparks flying out of the front of the car. When she checked on the driver, he was lying toward his right with his foot on the accelerator.
“Both my colleagues started crying and were frightened when I moved into the front seat and took hold of the steering wheel. I do not know how to drive and was just doing so to save us,” she said.
She said she managed to control the vehicle out of the way of oncoming trucks and switched off the engine. “The vehicle slowed down and finally stopped on the right side of the road,” she said.
She said that she and her fellow teachers then tried to help the teacher. They managed to flag down some motorists, but they refused to help the driver, saying that he would recover, Al-Mansour said.
She contacted the principal of her school and the director of education in Qusaiba who eventually provided assistance. They went home in a state of shock and later learned that the driver had died at a nearby hospital.
