Girl’s surgery death to be probed

The Ministry of Health announced Monday that it has set up a medical team to investigate the death of a girl child in Najran following surgery to remove a ring she had swallowed.
The ministry said the team consists of consultant physicians. The girl, Sulaf, was taken by her parents to King Khalid Hospital in Najran after she swallowed the ring at home.
The parents had demanded an investigation and accused the doctors of making a mistake during the procedure. Someone set up a hashtag on Twitter titled, “The assassination of the child Sulaf,” which called on the minister of health to take action.
If it is proven the hospital was negligent, a medical legal committee would recommend compensation under Islamic law. There are currently 21 medical legal committees in the Kingdom. Each is considered an independent Shariah court.
