JEDDAH: Muslims throughout the Kingdom are called upon to sight the crescent of the month of Shawwal on Monday evening, the Supreme Court said on Saturday.
In an announcement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Supreme Court said whoever sights the crescent moon by naked eyes or through binoculars are called upon to “report to the nearest court and register his testimony, or report to the authority of the region's center in his area where he sighted the crescent to facilitate his reaching to the nearest court.”
Monday, July 4th, is the 29th day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan for this year. Should the crescent moon be sighted on Monday night and the sightings are validated, the Supreme Court will declare the end of Ramadan and July 5 becomes the start of the month of Shawwal.
If there is no sighting of the crescent moon on Monday night, Ramadan ends on July 5 and the month of Shawwal begins on July 6.
