JEDDAH: The number of accidents in the Kingdom reached 1,500 per day with 45,376 road accidents taking place in April, according to an online newspaper.
Government statistics said that Riyadh was on top of the cities with 12,754 road accidents, which is 28 percent of total accidents that took place in the Kingdom. This is followed by Makkah with 11,247 accidents.
However, the data revealed that there was a five percent decrease in the number of road accidents in April in the entire country, compared to March.
In April, the Eastern Province comes third with 8,359 road accidents, followed by the Asir region with 2,875. Al-Qassim is in fourth position with 2,020 and Jazan is in sixth position with 1,949 road accidents during this period.
Najran had least number of road accidents among cities and regions of the Kingdom with just 193 cases. In Tabuk there were 1,682 road accidents; in Madinah there were 1,195; in the Northern Border area there were 1,087; and in the Hail region there were 864 road accidents during April.
The increase in road accidents in recent months has caused concern in the government as well as civil society organizations. Public Security Director Othman Al-Mihrij earlier said that the nation has failed to meet the challenge of traffic accidents, which remain the leading cause of deaths in the Kingdom.
“The traffic problem in the Kingdom has become a huge challenge, and the major responsibility for it lies with the public security system, as represented by the General Directorate of Traffic,” he had observed.
