Two-week hospitalization for mall murder accused

ABU DHABI: An Emirati woman accused of stabbing an American female school teacher to death in an upscale mall in the capital will be admitted to a specialized medical center for two weeks, according to a federal court order.
UAE authorities have listed suspect Ala’a Al-Hashemi of murdering Ibolya Ryan in Abu Dhabi’s Boutik Mall on Reem Island on Dec. 1 last year. She is also believed to have planted a homemade bomb outside the home of an Egyptian-American family living in a suburb in the capital.
Hashemi was subsequently detained after a dramatic raid on her home by armed police.
An investigation showed that she had been active on online radical message boards and websites, and her husband has been jailed. Her husband is in jail for participating what the government deems terrorist activities.
By the end of the two-week period in the medical center, a report from a medical committee will be submitted containing the results of the evaluation.
On a Tuesday session, four witnesses — two security guards and two mall employees — were called to testify. However, all four failed to show up and the judge ordered a second summoning, a press report said.
The hearing has been adjourned until April 27.
