Seven young Saudi leaders recently participated in the ninth annual G-20 Youth Forum in Germany, providing input on the most pressing social, environmental and economic issues facing the world.
The forum is one of the largest international events and took place from May 7 to 11. It brought together over 1,200 young leaders, students and academics, including representatives from the business world and parliaments.
The Saudi delegation was led by Abdulqader Alsobaihi, an industrial engineering student based in Canada. The six others are all from Al-Yamamah University in Riyadh, namely, Nahla Al-Arifi as minister of finance, Haifa Al-Moqbil as minister of international affairs, Abdulrahman Alkhudair as minister of education, Abdulmuhsen Alabdulkarim as minister of economy, Mazen Alswayan as minister of development and Gahdah Al-Rajhi as minister of social affairs.
"The Saudi delegation made significant input to the various committees and the final results of the summit,” said Alsobaihi.
According to Ksenia Khoruzhnikova, founder and president of the forum, the aim of the event is to create synergies among already successful people to spur them on to greater achievements. She said individuals and their networks could often be more effective in bringing about change than bureaucratic institutions.
The delegates participated in four committees, on entrepreneurship, family and career opportunities, education and human rights, and the tax system and living conditions for the youth.
Speaking at the summit, Khoruzhnikova highlighted the G-20Y Summit, a new initiative, which aims to provide an opportunity for young executives at international companies to collaborate on key global economic issues.
Khoruzhnikova said there were also opportunities for talented and passionate forum participants to receive mentorship from an executive at the G-20Y Summit.
The three-day summit consisted of round tables, committees, debates and joint sessions representing the independent ideas of young leaders. The summit concluded by sending its recommendations to the G-20 leaders and international organizations including the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Commission and the United Nations.
