Jubail checks roads with hi-tech system

The Royal Commission in Jubail has started using a hi-tech system to check the quality of its roads including the asphalt, traffic signals and rainwater drainage network.
The system is attached to a car, which the commission has brought in to help monitor the quality of its road network, particularly the work done by contractors.
Twenty engineers and technicians from the roads department, including contractors recently attended a three-day training course to operate the car.
This is part of the royal commission's commitment to invest in the world's best technology to maintain the infrastructure of Jubail Industrial City.
The car has several cameras for instant and continuous imaging of all elements of a road. It is connected to a computer that analyzes the data and links it to a Global Positioning System. It also determines the level of the road with a high-resolution laser.
The car will provide accurate data to reduce human error. Officials will be able to build a database of its roads that can be updated periodically. The system also provides projections on damage that might occur and the cost of current and future maintenance.
