Water wars

The article “Water wars may sink India-Pakistan ties” (Jan. 12) by Muhammad Waqas is an eye opener. As a matter of fact, it is just not India and Pakistan that may go to war over water. As water resources are fast depleting, it is said that in the years to come nations will fight over water. It is very important for leaders of the world to take this matter very seriously and must take steps to prevent this from happening. As for Pakistan and India, these neighboring countries should resolve this water issue amicably. War between the two countries over any issue will prove to be catastrophic for both sides.
Leaders of the two countries must not forget that both nations are currently facing economic hardships and any armed conflict would only aggravate the situation. Both the countries must respect the Indus Water Treaty so as to avoid any conflict. They must think about the masses that are fed up with killings and violence.
Keeping in view the situation, people all across the globe must use water very carefully and should stop wasting water. World governments should also swing into action to address the issue before it is too late. Laws should be made and strictly enforced to prevent wastage of water. The public and the private sectors must join hands to increase awareness on this issue. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
