The child, 10, is suspected to have fallen in the lagoon early in the morning.
A number of Civil Defense rescue teams including divers participated in the three hours long operation.
“The Civil Defense sent rescue teams including coast guard divers shortly after receiving a report of the suspected drowning of a child in the lagoon in the Balad district,” spokesman of Makkah Civil Defense Lt. Col. Saeed Serhan said.
It was Capt. Khaled Al-Shenaifi of the Civil Defense who found the body on the floor of the lagoon, Serhan added. Investigations are under way.
