The Makkah governor announced that bidding for these specific projects is now open for the 13 local and international contracting companies.
He said the projects consist of the construction of six new dams, increasing the current capacity of the canals for the drainage of flood and rainwater and digging a new drainage canal.
“The achievements made in the efforts to deal with the flood and rainwater problem were made possible by the strong support and close follow up of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and Crown Prince Naif, the deputy premier and minister of interior,” he said.
The governor said the implementation of the permanent-solution projects comes in the wake of the execution of 14 ad hoc projects for the drainage of flood and rainwater in a record time of four months. He said the arrangements that have been made to deal with the current rainy season included the construction of five dams of which two were at Wadi (valley) Muthawab and three in Wadi Quos. He added that the dams were equipped with early-warning sirens.
Prince Khaled Al-Faisal said preparations also included the setting up of 16 support and emergency centers manned with qualified personnel from the Civil Defense in various parts of Jeddah in addition to the establishment of a crisis-management center at the Jeddah governorate.
