OIC secretary-general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said in a statement that “the use of force will only lead to more violence and bloodshed, thus exacerbating the crisis and making it more complex.”
“The continued military escalation in the light of continuing regional and global rejection of such escalation will push the country to slide toward internal risks which threaten peace, security and stability in the country and in the region,” Ihsanoglu warned.
Ihsanoglu also stressed the organization’s rejection of “any form of foreign intervention in Syria.”
He said the OIC was ready to do what it could “to contain the current developments, and in the manner that would satisfy all parties and achieve the desired consensus, which guarantees stability in this country.”
Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Sabah earlier said the Arab world’s foreign ministers would meet soon to discuss developments in Syria.
“There will be a meeting of Arab foreign ministers to study the events in Syria,” the minister said, without specifying the date for the gathering.
“Consultations are under way to set a date,” he said.
The ministers first met on September 13 in Cairo where they called on the Syrian authorities to “immediately stop the bloodshed.”
As China joined Russia in pressing for prompt reforms a top Syrian official said in Damascus that President Assad plans to create a new constitution.
The death toll, already topping 2,900, according to UN calculations, rose further on Tuesday, with three people shot dead in the central city of Homs and another man dying of wounds sustained there a day earlier, activists said.
