The thobes are youthful, colorful and trendy. Perfect uniforms for young modern Muslims who want to wear their faith on their sleeves — literally. The thobes are versatile and comfortable as well, making them ideal for the urban lifestyle of these contemporary followers of Islam.
The thobes have already gained a following from abroad, with many Muslims living in the West praising the stylish traditional garb. “A lot of people from the States and the UK are contacting us saying the thobes are perfect for Friday prayers and family-oriented occasions,” says One Ummah founder, Amr Al-Sheikh.
The thobes are both a stylish and conservative alternative to the boring, over-done layered look that many Muslim females have resorted too in order to stay within the requirements of their Islamic dress code. “Thobes are traditional by nature, but our thobes are also extremely trendy by design,” comments Sindi founder, Anmar Sindi.
As a multibrand company, the idea of manufacturing Sindi’s very own thobes came naturally. “At Sindi Thobes, we have opened the door to collaborators,” explains Sindi. “It is a concept that brings together designers to create something truly unique and creative.”
What came even more naturally was their specific collaboration with One Ummah. A UK-based clothing brand that aims to promote peace and unity between people of all origins, races, and creeds, One Ummah was an ideal design partner.
“I believe that we are living in a time of many wars and much suffering, and we need to express our desire for peace, even if it is just through fashion,” explains Al-Sheikh. “The word ummah is the Arabic word for ‘nation or people’ and what we mean by ‘One Ummah’ is one nation or people.”
One Ummah’s message of unity coincides with its other designs, based on messages that promote peace, tolerance, benevolence, unity and patience. Their slogan, ‘Come To Common Terms,’ reflects the clothing company’s aim to help bridge the gap that exists between the East and West, explains Al-Sheikh. “The slogan invites people from differing backgrounds to meet on common ground.”
The calligraphy is actually One Ummah’s own exclusive font, which “uses Arabic letters that are manipulated to read as Latin text,” says Al-Sheikh. “This specific line had the intention to really show what we can do; there was no limitation, creatively speaking.” The colors are bold, the details are attention-grabbing, and the designs are a fusion of Middle Eastern inspiration and culture.
“We will be collaborating with different designers and design houses, but we look forward to continuing this partnership with One Ummah,” states Sindi.
So then what’s next? “I think our next collection is going to be muted down compared to this first one,” explains Al-Sheikh, “but it will still be fresh and funky.”
