Divorce Over Costly Cosmetics

QATIF, 5 October 2004 — A Saudi couple got more than they bargained for while out shopping in one of the malls here, Al-Madinah newspaper reported. According to an eyewitness, the wife bought cosmetics worth SR500, which made the husband mad. He kept shouting at her and ended the argument with a slap in her face. Now it was the turn of the wife to get mad at him for slapping her in front of shoppers at the crowded mall. She wanted an instant divorce, saying she would never go home with him. The scene ended when the woman’s brother arrived and took his sister back to their father’s house.
