JEDDAH, 7 March 2004 — Safety patrols from the Civil Defense have shut down 33 businesses for violating safety regulations. They include gas stations, storerooms, garages and carpentry workshops.

The Civil Defense teams inspected more than 500 businesses in central and north Jeddah, an official said.

The official said the businesses were shut down after they repeatedly ignored warnings to comply with regulations including installing fire extinguishers. He added inspection campaigns will also be targeting buildings under construction to ensure that they conform to the construction plans and, in large buildings, feature the emergency exits required under the regulations.
