RIYADH, 22 October 2003 — The World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) will distribute 100,000 food baskets during Ramadan.
Dr. Saleh Al-Wohaibi, secretary-general of WAMY, said the cost of SR10 million would be raised by voluntary donations. A contract has been signed with a local company for distributing the food baskets in different parts of the Kingdom.
The secretary-general also announced that another component of WAMY’s Ramadan plans would be “mobile iftar.” This will be dates, water and other items in packets to be handed out on highways and at major intersections. WAMY aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by motorists speeding to their destinations before sunset.
Asked about the criteria for eligibility for the food baskets, Dr. Al-Wohaibi said it was sadaqa and not zakah but that care would be taken to ensure that the beneficiaries are those who are in genuine need.
Each basket will consist of rice, wheat, sugar, macaroni, cooking oil, salt, soup, etc.
