MAKKAH, 17 March — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd has ordered financial assistance for the families of the dead and injured in Monday’s school blaze in Makkah, according to Interior Minister Prince Naif.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the families of the fire victims in the holy city to convey his condolences, Prince Naif said the results of investigations into the tragedy would be announced once they are completed.
A total of 14 schoolgirls perished in a stampede that followed the fire engulfing the Intermediate Girls’ School No. 31 in Makkah. At least 52 students and teachers were injured in the incident.
Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed yesterday donated SR100,000 each to the families of the 14 girls died in the tragedy in his bid to alleviate their suffering.
Alwaleed donates SR1.4 million
Meanwhile, Prince Alwaleed ibn Talal, chairman of the Kingdom Holding Company, has donated SR100,000 to the family of each victim of last week’s Makkah school fire.
As the death toll from the tragedy was put at 14, the amount donated totaled SR1.4 million ($375,000).
In a telephone conversation with Prince Abdul Majeed, Prince Alwaleed offered his condolences to the families of the victims and expressed his deep sorrow and sympathy.
Prince Alwaleed sent a letter of condolence along with the 14 donation checks to Prince Abdul Majeed’s office, which will distribute them to the bereaved families.
Prince Alwaleed had donated $831,000 to the victims of the Egyptian train fire recently.
