RIYADH, 2 November — A student at King Saud University’s girls wing hit a college mate on the chest with a sharp instrument seriously injuring her, a newspaper reported yesterday.

Al-Hayat daily said the injured girl was immediately taken to hospital by the university authorities, who refused to give any details about the incident.

The authorities said the girl’s wound was not deep and that the condition of the student was stable.

There were differing reports on the reasons that led to the incident. According to one witness, the girl was attacked for stealing her colleague’s mobile phone.

"There was a big quarrel between the two outside the classroom and that ended up in a fight," she added.

This is the first time such a case is reported from a women’s college in the Kingdom.
