RIYADH, 7 October — Ajeeb.com, a bilingual web portal, has launched the world’s first online service that instantly translates Arabic websites into English, complementing its English-to-Arabic Tarjim service that was introduced last year.

“The Arabic-to-English translation, which is a beta version based on advanced proprietary technology from Ajeeb.com’s mother company Sakhr Software, comes as the portal celebrates its first anniversary,” Fahad Al-Sharekh, CEO of Ajeeb.com, said here yesterday.

Al-Sharekh said access to independent and accurate information and exchange of views between people of different cultures, languages and faiths have greater demand now than ever and Ajeeb.com seeks to facilitate this.

Ajeeb.com has become one of the leading bilingual Internet portals that offer free services for users, Al-Sharekh said.

“After empowering our Arab users last year to browse English websites in their own language, thus offering information and services they would not otherwise have access to, we are now providing our English-speaking visitors with similar insight into Arabic sites,” he said.

Ajeeb.com, which recently broke the regional traffic record in being the first bilingual portal to register over 40 million page views per month, has boosted its investment in the services it offers in terms of technology and content.

Ajeeb.com’s Arabic language technology was also lent to the new web mail service, allowing users to instantly view their mail in either Arabic or English.

Al-Sharekh said that Ajeeb’s bilingual Al-Dalil, the largest and most comprehensive online directory in the Middle East, was expanded to list over 35,000 regional websites.
