Nine persons including a woman have been sentenced to prison sentences ranging between 1-18 years besides a ban on their travel for their involvement in terror-related activities.
Those convicted include citizens from both Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
In one case, four were convicted of embracing an extremist ideology, challenging the legitimacy of the state and its rulers, and attempting to travel to Yemen to join Al-Qaeda, among other crimes.
The first defendant, a Yemeni national, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and deportation from the country after completing his sentence, for trying to travel to join Al-Qaeda.
The other Yemeni defendant in the case was sentenced to 18 years in prison and deportation for several crimes, including embracing the takfiri ideology, contrary to the principles of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and challenging the legitimacy of the state.
The third and fourth defendants, both Saudi nationals, received sentences and travel bans of 13 and nine years respectively, for attempting to travel to Yemen to join Al-Qaeda, and willingness to confront the security forces while doing so.
On Tuesday, the Special Criminal Court in Riyadh also announced initial sentences for Saudi citizens for terrorism-related activities and traveling to conflict areas. Sentences were issued in the presence of the head judge, the prosecutor, and the defendants, ranging from two years and 10 months to four years.
One defendant in the case was convicted of arranging the travel and transportation of two people to conflict zones, concealing funds and banned substances, meeting with extremists in his home, and watching banned films promoting extremism. He was sentenced to four years in prison, to be followed by a four-year travel ban.
The second defendant was sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison for breaking money-laundering regulations, attempting to travel to conflict zones, funding terrorism, concealing the activities of another defendant in the case, and watching banned films that encourage murder. The court also sentenced the defendant to a three-year travel ban.
In another case, the Special Criminal Court in Riyadh sentenced two Saudi men and a Saudi woman to jail on Tuesday, for their involvement in a prohibited demonstration in Jeddah against the state’s legitimate rulers.
One of the defendants was sentenced to three years in prison and a four-year travel ban. The second defendant, a Saudi male, was sentenced to one year and six months in prison, and a three-year travel ban.
The third defendant, a Saudi woman, was sentenced to one year in prison and a three-year travel ban after completing her sentence.
