This is with reference to the article “An election under fire” by Gwynne Dyer (Feb. 7). It is really saddening to know that a resources-rich country like Nigeria is faced with leadership crisis. It came to me as a revelation that the sitting president of Nigeria is a zoologist by qualification. We all know that zoology is a branch of biology that deals with the animal kingdom. Goodluck Jonathan’s qualification, thus, makes him an ideal candidate to deal with the members of the terrorist organization Boko Haram, who are no different from animals in their barbarity and lack of sense.
I find it strange that a person with such a dismal record as the leader of a nation was awarded a CAF Platinum award for his commitment and contribution to sports particularly the development of football. Isn’t it a perfect case of misplaced priorities? Instead of working to wipe out terrorists from the country and to uplift the living standard of the common man, he is busy focusing on the development and promoting of sports. That does not mean that it’s not important but at a time when a bunch of lunatics are making efforts to establish a so-called caliphate, such issues ideally should take a backseat.
Like the self-ascribed Islamic State sweeping across Syria and Iraq, Boko Haram is fast becoming a threat to the countries neighboring Nigeria.
During his tenure as the president, Jonathan has done very little for his country and countrymen. Good luck remained elusive to the country during his reign. He is now bracing for yet another term. We pray that Nigerians get a strong leadership that tackles the issues facing the country effectively.
