Hugh Jackman’s battle with cancer continues

NEW YORK: Hugh Jackman has had another cancerous growth removed.
The 45-year-old actor attended the premiere of his latest film, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” Saturday night with a bandage over his nose. He told The Associated Press he had a basal-cell carcinoma removed two nights earlier.
Jackman said learned the results of a recent biopsy earlier on Thursday, and had it removed right after. Basal-cell carcinoma is a slow-growing form of skin cancer. Jackman was treated for same disease last year but said the prognosis was good: “It’s all out now.”
But he urges others to “get checkups and wear sunscreen.”
He says he hopes kids will listen to X-Men character Wolverine, or at least the man who plays him, and be smart about their health.
This is Jackman’s second battle with basal cell carcinoma. He was treated for the disease in November 2013, also on his nose.
BCC is a treatable and common form of skin cancer marked by lesions or growths on the outermost layer of the skin. This cancer generally doesn’t spread beyond the tumor site. However, the Skin Cancer Foundation warns that the disease can be disfiguring if not treated promptly.
The organization says BCC growths “often look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars” and are “usually caused by a combination of cumulative UV exposure and intense, occasional UV exposure.”
Jackman, 45, will appear on the big screen as Wolverine in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” opening May 23, and will host the Tony Awards on June 8.
He’s also set to star as Blackbeard in the 2015 film “Pan,” based on the original “Peter Pan” story.
