MANNAR, Sri Lanka: Hundreds of ethnic Tamil women have demanded information on their relatives missing from the country’s civil war, defying widespread military surveillance, threats and the possibility of arrest.
The protesters held a peaceful rally Friday in the northern town of Mannar after which a 10-point memorandum to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was read.
The letter asked the commissioner to obtain information on their loved ones and if they are dead who is responsible.
The women say they got no information on their sons and husbands handed over to the military heeding a call to surrender at the end of the fighting in 2009.
The protest came days after a mother and daughter who campaigned for the release of their kin were arrested and detained.
