Jaipur Gems: Jewels for the stars

Be it Indian actress Deepika Padukone’s classic diamond earrings she wore in an event to promote her movie “Chennai Express” or actress Madhuri Dixit’s 23 carat, finely crafted gold bangles in an episode of Bigg Boss 7, jeweler Siddhartha Sacheti’s designs have adorned many a celebrity.
Stars like Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Kajal Agarwal, Sridevi, and Southern superstar Rajnikant’s daughters have adorned Sacheti’s jewels.
“Most celebs want something stunning but yet not overpowering when it comes to their public appearances. Priyanka Chopra for Ram Leela, Zanjeer, Exotic and many such appearances has been seen wearing the Iconic JG Chandbali jewels. Madhuri Dixit has adorned our jewels beautifully, be it for anchoring a TV dance show (Jhalak Dikhla Jaa) or promoting her new film ‘Dedh Ishquiya,’” said Sacheti, adding that the pieces are customized for particular celebrities.
So do actresses buy the stuff they flaunt on the red carpet?
“When an actress adorns jewelry, her look is the most important factor that influences such a decision. Buying and returning jewels is completely unto the actresses and if they like something a lot they do buy them, else they may return the jewels, it is completely their decision,” he said.
Sacheti, who holds a degree in gemology, runs the ‘House of Jaipur Gems’ with his parents. The family has been in the jewelry business for seven generations.
Sacheti’s journey into the jewelry industry began well in his childhood.
“Born into a family business that dates back to over 300 years, I was groomed to run the business. I was brought to the store in my free time when I was in school and college. Over the period of time I have learned that delivering what you promise is the most important aspect of any business,” he said.
Sacheti himself is a certified jewelry designer from GIA. “Designing isn’t about being able to draw and render, it is an ability to create your inspiration into pieces that you will love to make and more so your patrons and clients would love and be inspired with as well.”
Some jewels are inspired by India’s royal past, while some are inspired by the modern day woman. Embellished with precious stones, each design is a limited edition, a delight for eyes thus etching a lineage, an era of royalty and exclusiveness.
His collection, The Dal Lake, inspired from the gorgeous Dal Lake in Kashmir, encompasses the brilliant fluidity and stillness of the lake splattered with lotus rubies and flawless rose cut diamonds. The Princess of Samode collection comprises an elaborate scheme of design, keeping in mind the royals of India. The entire collection was shot on location at the Samode Palace in Jaipur, and was well received.
Initially, the label’s focus was primarily on gold jewelry, but it quickly graduated to diamonds, other precious stones, jadau (engraved jewelry) and polki jewellery (uncut diamonds).
“Our aesthetic is majestic yet controlled. It’s tradition in a contemporary interpretation. You’re not limited to wearing the jewelry with a saree; you could easily pair it with a classic gown,” explains Sacheti.
Asked about the latest trends in jewelry, Sacheti said: “The trends this year are heavily influenced with gold and fancy yellow diamonds. We foresee timelessness in designs and the age of classics and art deco to be coming back very, very strongly.”
He added: “It’s not about following trends, be it stacks of bracelets or two followed on a wrist; it’s about what accentuates the dress code. It can be about mixing jewelry from different periods such as a big bold ring and a diamond studded necklace, or that one piece that brings to life whatever the chosen gemstone be.”
Sacheti has a word of advice for aspiring jewelry designers. “My only advice to upcoming designers and jewelers is to be truthful to your clients and your business; a small act of cheating can damage your reputation for a lifetime and adds disgrace to the industry at large.”
