It is forbidden to use phones while driving because of the danger of causing accidents, the Eastern Province’s mufti said here recently.
Khalaf bin Mohammed Al-Mutlaq was speaking to the media here during the launch of a campaign entitled “Don’t Be Captive to Your Mobile.”
He also warned that young people are becoming addicted to the technology on their smart phones, distracting them from their school and religious duties.
“It is forbidden to drive and use your mobile because of the risks involved.” He said drivers must focus on the road and if they want to use their mobiles they should stop.
Al-Mutlaq said that young people would go wrong if they stay away from the teachings of the Qur’an. He praised officials for supporting the campaign.
Ahmed Al-Adwani, the campaign director, said the administrations of mosques in the region have supported the campaign, with many imams delivering sermons on the matter.
He said recent statistics have shown an increase in accidents caused by people driving and using their mobiles. Dammam University, the traffic safety committee of Saudi Aramco, the EP traffic police and the municipality are part of the campaign, he said.
