Alwaleed Foundation donates $1M to Philippine typhoon victims

Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation - Global, chaired by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, has said it is donating US$1 million to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
In a press statement dated Nov. 26, 2013, the foundation said it was making the donation in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of the Philippines, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and The World Food Program WFP.
“The aid supports the victims of the tragedy in all affected areas in an aim to help rebuild their homes and lives,” the statement said.
Typhoon Haiyan, code-named Yolanda in the Philippines, slammed into the central Philippines on Nov. 8 with maximum winds of nearly 300 kilometers per hour, destroying entire towns, farmlands and infrastructure. The confirmed death toll has exceeded 6,000, thousands more people are still unaccounted for, and about 11 million people either lost their homes entirely or suffered damage.
Alwaleed Foundation’s donation is not the first for the Philippines. In 2009, it supported the Philippines through a donation for medical aid for the victims of Typhoon Ketsana. It also supported the Muslim Mindanao Integrated Higher Development Center (CHED-ARMM), Philippines for capacity building, research and scholarships.
The Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundations are involved in a wide spectrum of humanitarian and philanthropic activities in more than 80 countries. Their main focus areas have been established around strategic initiatives, ranging from disaster relief and community development, to women and youth empowerment, as well as promoting intercultural understanding.
