Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, was briefed on the progress made in the launching of an encyclopedia on Haj and the Two Holy Mosques currently undertaken by The King Abdul Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah).
Prince Salman met with Darah’s Secretary-General Fahd Al-Samari at the Yamama Palace in Riyadh on Thursday.
Darah is also working on a historical biography of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the documentation of social life in the Kingdom, besides another project on the names of places in the Kingdom. It is also working on a historical and geographical information system for Makkah and Madinah and other places in the Kingdom in general.
The crown prince also viewed the documentation of oral narratives recorded with the help of more than 5,000 old residents in different parts of the Kingdom and examined the achievements made in the field of collecting historical documents. There are an estimated 4 million such documents, including more than 5,000 original manuscripts from different important locations.
Al-Samari briefed the prince about the services offered by Darah to researchers, scientific and publication centers. Darah collaborates in organizing exhibitions, conferences and seminars, besides translating important works and taking steps to repair and preserve relics of historical interest.
The prince directed Darah officials to speed up the planned opening of a number of history study centers in various provinces and promote studies on the history and civilizations of the Kingdom and the Arabian Peninsula.
The crown prince also thanked citizens, researchers and families who supplied documents and information to Darah to achieve its national and historical mission.
“The history of the Kingdom is the history of all its citizens. The unity of the nation is cemented by the Kingdom’s founder King Abdul Aziz through the participation of citizens. His mission was carried out by his sons, King Saud, King Faisal, King Khaled and King Fahd. These are the main pillars of the stability, security and unity that we enjoy in the Kingdom,” he said.
The crown prince stressed the importance of fostering interest in the Kingdom’s history, which is a vital part of national memory and heritage. He also pointed out the importance of the Kingdom as the land of the “Qiblah” (the direction toward which Muslims face for prayer) and the seat of Islamic heritage.
